Work/Life Balance
The Commute

Commuting to work can cut into valuable time with your family, partner, pets and hobbies. If you have a long commute, think of ways to use the time as productively as possible.

If you are taking public transit, use your commuting time to catch up on your industry reading. If you drive a car to work, listen to the news to catch up on current events or listen to a book on tape or CD to learn something new.

To reduce your commuting time, try experimenting with different starting times. You may find that leaving 5 minutes sooner or later shaves off 10 or more minutes on your commuting time.

Another alternative that cuts down commuting time is to work from home one or more days a week. If you have a home office and the equipment you need then telecommuting can be a viable option. Discuss the possibility with your boss and explain that you need one day a week or every other week to catch up on projects that require quiet and attention to detail.

Evaluate the time you spend commuting to make sure that it is not making too big a dent in your family and hobby time. You may need to consider finding a job closer to home or moving closer to work.
