Success Story: It’s Published! by Natalie Quesnel

I may be young but I am proud of my accomplishments. Most of my successes have felt like they were the result of luck or fate. It wasn't until I started my career coaching with Joni, and looked at success, that I started to see the power of intention.

I spoke to people who were successful and people who weren't. Looking at the results of my interviews, Joni and I identified a common theme - intention was the key to success. The successful interviewees actively pursued success, set a goal and went after it.

When it came time to set my own goals, I found it daunting. I knew where I saw myself but how do I break that down into the SMART criteria?

When I first sat down, I was feeling skeptical. I planned to complete the task and move onto doing the work I knew lay before me. Before I knew it, I had almost one full page of SMART goals – I even threw in some personal ones.

From this list, Joni and I identified the first career goal to tackle. My goal was to write a travel article on a back-packing tour to New Zealand (The Kiwi Experience). My aim was to submit the article to Outpost magazine to meet their June 26th deadline for possible publication in the November/December issue.

When we met for my Action Planning Session, I found Joni’s sticky note process (“Action Plan”, as she calls it) so simple that it was brilliant! Before I knew it my first short term goal was broken down into bite size pieces. I typed up the timeline set with the sticky notes and used it as my route marker. We took it a step at a time, a week at a time.

I had a plan to now keep me on track. Joni checked in with me weekly to make sure I was on track. I felt accountable to myself and others who were aware of my goal. I had shared it with many people in my life in hopes of extra support.

I submitted the article to meet the deadline – one deep breath, final glance and hit of the send button. It was an accomplishment quietly and confidently shared with my computer, my editor and Joni.

When I got the news that my manuscript was the chosen one the first thing I did was forwarded it to Joni – I even tried to get her on cell before running upstairs to tell everyone! I printed off the e-mail and shared it with any unsuspecting person to cross my path – I had done this! My hard work was met with success!

It felt like forever until it arrived on my doorstep. Glossy, full colour, smelling of fresh ink - me in my published glory! My story, my name, my photos – my goal!
