Job Search/Career Planning

  What Next
by Barbara Moses
This book is the best career planning and job search book on the market for Canadians, in my opinion. It is very well laid out and easy to read. Some of the messages are generic in nature but it still provides a great reference for those examining their career.
  What Color is your Parachute?
by Richard N. Bolles
This book is a classic for Americans and Canadians looking for work. It is updated regularly and includes lots of tips and tricks to help find a job.
  Secrets of Six Figure Women
by Barbara Stanny
This book contains very powerful messages for women planning their career and examining hurdles to reaching their potential.
  Fire Your Boss
by Stephen M. Pollan
Want a refreshing look at career management? This book offers tips to take control of your career destiny by putting a stop to your boss making career decisions for you. Pollan also recommends you kill your career and stop expecting it to fulfill all your needs. His concept of job fishing is very appropriate for today’s job market i.e. that there are very few jobs that offer lasting stability. He emphasizes the power of the all mighty buck in the pursuit of happiness.
  Winning
by Jack Welch
He says it like it is, like it or not. That's Jack. If you like Jack Welch's style of management, then you'll love this book. He shoots from the hip on many topics from company structures and policies, to fighting the competition, to career planning. This book is great for anyone in business - from someone just starting out to a CEO - as it offers tips and advice for all levels.

Leadership

  Primal Leadership
by Daniel Goleman
Daniel Goleman is the guru on emotional intelligence and this is his latest book looking at EQ and leadership.
  Weirdos in the Workplace
by John Putzier.
Geared at HR personnel but valuable to anyone working with eccentric people, this book offers tips for dealing with everything from “Blue Suit Bob” who wears the same suit and shirt to work everyday, to “Circadian Charlie” who does his best work at 3 am, to “Helen the Hypochondriac” who has many herbal remedies and other advice to cure your ails. There is a terrific section in the back on tools to help manage people including one of the best flow charts on behaviour management I’ve seen!

Personal Growth

Feeling Good: The New Mood Therapy
by David D. Burns
This book is promoted as an anti-drug way to treat depression although the strategies for self esteem building and handling criticism are very good for anyone struggling with a critical boss or difficult work environment.
Organizing from the Inside Out: A Foolproof System for Organizing Your Home, Your Office and Your Life
by Julie Morgenstern.
Julie is a professional organizer and has great tips for every area of your life including career related areas such as your purse or briefcase, your home office and your filing systems. If you have a love or a hate relationship with organization – this book will motivate you beyond belief!
Start Late, Finish Rich: The Canadian Edition
by David Bach
Here is a great book for those of you who didn’t start your retirement savings at 18! There is a bit of guilt tripping reminding you of the power of compound interest had you started when you had that paper route, but it gives fantastic advice to help you prepare for the future financially. I include it on my recommended reading list because it contains great career related pages on asking for a raise and starting a business.
